About the advisory group

Who is involved in the project?

Ministry of Disabled People - Whaikaha

Ministry of Disabled People - Whaikaha is a new ministry that works with communities and Māori to improve the lives of disabled New Zealanders. The ministry has several key responsibilities:

  • advising government agencies on disability matters
  • building stronger connections between disability groups and government
  • tracking New Zealand's progress on disability rights commitments. This includes the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and the New Zealand Disability Strategy.

Supported Decision-making Advisory Group

A special advisory group was formed to help develop this online resource about supported decision-making. This group brought together:

  • Whaikaha staff
  • other government agencies
  • non-government organizations
  • disabled people.

The advisory group used their personal experience and professional expertise to guide the development of this resource. The aim is that this resource will be useful for:

  • families and whānau (extended family)
  • service providers
  • disabled people and tāngata whaikaha Māori (Māori disabled people).
